Character Name: Med'an Character Canon: World of Warcraft Canon Point: post-comic (roughly the beginning of Wrath of the Lich King) Age: chronologically almost 30; mentally/physically a teenager.
Crime:Parricide - the killing of his grandmother, Aegwynn.
Background:link Personality: Med'an is an unusual young man. He is not only half-human, but also quarter-orc and quarter-Draenei, and raised by an undead mage. Yet despite all of that - and the fact that the comic's plot throws him into dangerous and serious situations - he seems to be a fairly normal teenager. He makes jokes and funny faces, complains about being hungry, and gets overexcited about visiting new places. He is kind and compassionate, even to (most) enemies, and seems to picture himself as something of a hero. Meryl (his foster-father) mentions that he taught Med'an “that the strong aid the weak. And that, above all, truth matters”, and though it is never stated outright, it is likely that he also taught Med'an the Three Virtues of the Light – respect, tenacity, and compassion.
His main flaws are his insecurity and brashness, as well as a big lack of experience. He dashes off immediately after finding out that the mother he thought was dead had instead left him (presuming that it was abandonment, though it ends up more complicated than that), wanting both to rescue her and to prove to her that he was worth keeping, to make her "feel sorry for abandoning him". When he discovers who his father is, he frets that people will think of him as a monster and contemplates keeping it a secret even from Meryl (who he fears would stop loving him if he knew).
Notably, Med'an never really seems to differentiate between Alliance and Horde. He's not confused or disturbed by working with members of both sides, and does not seem to have negative thoughts about any species. The only time he considers one side negatively is when he sees the destruction the orcs wrought upon Draenor – he thinks to himself that he is a “monster”, related to the “mad orcs” who destroyed so much (such teenager, very angst) – and that is arguably more about the Old Horde than the current Horde, which has many more races and somewhat different values. In terms of relationships, what appears more important to him is how others view him than how he should view others, and this is where much of his insecurity shines through.
He grew up in relative isolation, and has huge amounts of power but little training or practical experience. He learns quickly and enjoys it, but often mentions that he feels he has "much more to learn" and that he is only doing "what people taught him". Curiosity and a thirst for knowledge does motivate him; he begins his studies of the Holy Light with his uncle very quickly and mentions that he finds it satisfying. In the World of Warcraft Special, Med'an's page is narrated thusly: “Still others find their contentment in knowledge. And to work alone has no satisfaction. Because for some, happiness is not freedom, but a sense of belonging. And a sense of accomplishment.”
(One note: I refer to Med'an as a teenager, and so does the comic at times. Chronologically, he's actually almost 30; since Draenei presumably age slower than orcs or humans, his mixed heritage means that he's physically/mentally maturing slower than normal. I usually put his mental age around 14-17.)
Abilities: Med'an has a large range of abilities, being essentially triple-classed in World of Warcraft terms. In addition, he is skilled in a variety of weapons (his favorite seems to be the staff) and hand-to-hand combat.
In short:
- Mage abilities include both defensive and offensive spells. There are three types: arcane, fire, and ice. Most of these are what you would expect from a mage - fireballs, (very small) blizzards, etc. A mage is also able to teleport, temporarily polymorph enemies (into sheep, squirrels, and other small harmless creatures), conjure food and water, and featherfall.
- Shaman abilities are more diverse: a shaman can use his connection to the elements both to harm and to heal. Water, Fire, Earth and Air are all included in a shaman's arsenal, as well as the more mysterious "Spirit of the Wilds", which relates to the spirit of every living thing. Med'an often calls upon the Spirit of the Earth to heal, and on lightning to strike his foes.
- Paladin abilities are similar to the shaman's; instead of relying on the elements, the paladin calls on the Holy Light. The Light is not a deity, and more of an inherent energy that exists in every being. It is coaxed out by good deeds and subtle acts of kindness. Med'an has quickly learned to use this holy power for healing. A paladin can also create a shield (commonly referred to as a "bubble" in-game) that absorbs damage.
Med'an is by nature kind of overpowered, so please let me know if any nerfs are needed! He will definitely not be able to teleport while in Expiation (though there's a short range teleport spell called “Blink” that might be ok?).
Inventory:Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian; clothes and stuff; a small portrait of his grandmother, Aegwynn; a copy of “The Light and How to Swing It” (an instructional book about being a paladin – no actual use); a whittling knife.
Samples:Herearethe TDM threads I have – apologies for the length of them, I can write a prose piece if you would like to see more!
