Crime: Adultery. Rex has committed a multitude of so-called "crimes," including murder, theft, multiple counts of international terrorism, property destruction, and arguably? Noise pollution. At this point in the series, being unfaithful to his former girlfriend is probably what hits him the hardest, and even though he is trying to move forward from it and accept that he ruined his relationship with the first person in his life to ever show him real love is what cuts him deepest.

Background: WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS PAST S1 OF THE SERIES

Also content warnings for body horror, child neglect, and mentions/implications of graphic violence.

As a child in a food-insecure, low-income household in one of Chicago’s roughest neighborhoods, Rex had very little hope for the future in his youth, with it being stated that he had no friends due to his status as a child who obviously hailed from one of the lowest rungs of poverty and spent much of his time stealing food for his family. Born to neglectful parents who never saw their firstborn son as anything more than a meal-ticket, he was “randomly” scouted by a clandestine government operative, who essentially paid Rex’s parents handsomely for their boy’s entire personhood.

Afterwards, Rex was whisked away and trained in a secret facility around the age of twelve or thirteen, where he underwent a rigorous series of training and tests to prepare him for the life-altering experiment that would ultimately give him his explosive superpowers. His handler, Radcliffe, would then send him on a series of missions where he essentially was made to assassinate a number of high ranking government officials, thinking that these were “bad guys,” although through his own observations was able to parse that Radcliffe had been using him to kill innocent people and eventually take over the US government. After a scuffle that ended up in Rex accidentally murdering Radcliffe and intentionally torching the facility he was partially raised in, he met and fell in love with Atom Eve, with whom he joined the Teen Team, which he was a part of for something like 4 to 5 years.

At the start of the series, Rex is promoted to Guardian of the Globe as the original few were grotesquely murdered and replacements were needed immediately.

Personality: Clad in obnoxious neon hues that are somehow less loud than his actual voice, it is perhaps telling that upon an initial introduction, Rex Splode is the only member of the Teen Team that kind-hearted protagonist, Mark Grayson, doesn’t like. Cocky, ill-tempered, and foul-tongued, there almost always seems to be something Rex is downright furious about, even on the best of days. He despises waking up early and detests working hard, sometimes prioritizing his own safety over that of innocent civilians. He is also impulsive and known to make poor decisions when his ego is even microscopically threatened, such as when he cheats on his long-time girlfriend with their teammate after be becomes jealous of her burgeoning friendship with Mark.

However, if one is willing to look past Rex’s nasty exterior (and just don’t date him, don’t date him or get romantically involved with him please), quite a few noteworthy traits come to light. Rex is deeply insecure, still reeling from being abandoned and betrayed by both his biological family and his former handler. He is loudly and spitefully doing all he can to be seen and heard and loved for all the wrong things, mostly to disprove the ever-present inner voice that suggests that his parents were right to throw him away. As a result, his self-destructive tendencies mimic the annihilation he can physically commit. He may have several years under his belt as a superhero at his already tender age, but all the control he has over his body is sorely lacking when it comes to his emotional proclivities.

For all his staunchly obvious flaws, what says the most about Rex is that despite having every quintessential supervillain backstory element, he chooses to make something of himself and be a superhero. His transition from the minor to major leagues may be a rough one, and while it’s clear that he’s got a lot to learn, it’s evident that when he’s willing to pull his head out of his ass there are a few admirable traits that begin to surface. After finally becoming comfortable with his teammates, when he helps throw a party to welcome back one of his injured teammates, it’s strikingly clear that he is the bizarre glue that holds the team together. Rex is always the one cracking jokes during tense moments and encouraging the others to engage in goofy shenanigans that will help them recharge from their difficult and dangerous lives. While he could do to throw less verbal potshots at them, he believes in his teammates and sees them as the closest thing he has to a family, often putting himself in harm’s way to keep them safe or lashing out if he feels that they aren’t being treated fairly.

Finally, Rex’s most positive personal quality is his openness to self-improvement. He is not the strongest, the kindest, or most disciplined superhero, sure. And yet as circumstances worsen and his world falls into disarray, he does his best to rise to the occasion and is working on becoming the kind of hero that people will actually remember. He also understands when he’s at fault, and has no hard feelings after Eve (rightfully) breaks up with him for cheating on her with their teammate, even going so far as to hug her days later when he discovers that she is safe in the midst of a vicious attack.

He’s got a long and difficult road ahead, but at least some of the time, it’s obvious that he’s willing to do the work to be a better person than he was the previous day.

Abilities: Summary is here.

Inventory: Seeing as Rex is essentially the property of the Global Defense Agency, he owns nothing but the clothes on his back and will appear with just that- His supersuit! His utility belt does contain an array of seemingly useless items, such as nickels, ping-pong-balls, and a set of jacks, but that’s about it. For the sake of exactness, let’s go with 5 nickels, 3 ping-pong balls, and that set of jacks.

Samples: 1 and 2
