| Before you submit your application, please review the Applications and Reserves section of the info / faq page, as there are additional rules regarding malleable protagonists, CRAU characters, fandom OCs, canon caps, player caps, and other important things to note. Applications will be processed in the order they are received and after the application cycle closes. We will only accept as many players as we have player slots, however, we will review all applications submitted during the cycle. Application cycles are not first come first serve, and instead will be judged on clarity of the app and samples. Application revisions will have three days to submit adjustments. If not submitted in time, they will have to wait until the next application cycle to resubmit. Application rejections will have to wait until the next application cycle to resubmit unless otherwise specified in the original rejection. You may either post your application in a comment to this post, or link to it from your character journal. Please use the following format for your comment in the subject line: CHARACTER | CANON | RESERVED / NOT RESERVED There is a limit of 2 characters initially maximum that can be played. (You can redeem additional character slots by way of the rewards page.) As with reservations, you may apply for 2 characters at a time. Proxy applications are not accepted. Malleable protagonists may not have preexisting relationships with other characters from their canon aside from base storyline. Canon Point: Age: Crime: All characters are accused of a crime upon their arrival, and it's printed on their indestructible parchment. This crime can be fitting of your character or ill-fitting. It can be a crime they've committed or a crime they would never commit. Consider that Expiation's definition of crimes may not mirror reflect what we think of when we consider crime in the real world. Feel free to think a little out of the box and more abstract. Fiction versus reality here doesn't so much make a difference. Please choose one crime, bearing in mind that there may be occasions in which the crime chosen could affect how a character interacts with certain events or situations. Background: You may provide a link to a wiki, for canon characters. If your wiki has limited information, or your character may not have much canon behind them, you are expected to write supplemental details without leaning too heavily into headcanon. For OCs, you don't need to provide an overly verbose background, just enough to give an accurate portrayal of the world they come from and definitive experiences that are important to their character. For CRAUS, please specify additional information about what they are carrying over from their prior game. This can also be limited to definitive experiences and relationships. Personality: Although this game heavily relies on the analysis and reflection of a character, we don't expect a dissertation. Please provide information on your character's motivations, how their relationships and experiences have affected or shaped them, and other related information. You may use character dialogue to further showcase this, but it's not expected. If you find it easier to use bullet point formats, feel free to do that. Please do not exceed 800 words. Abilities: If your character has any special abilities (magic, weapon skills, and so on), please list them here. Remember that world-breaking abilities will be diluted. Inventory: A list of inventory that your character is carrying on them can be put here. Characters will not have access to an infinite hammer space, so please only list things that would make sense for your character to be physically carrying. Personality: Miu comes across as being distant and maybe even arrogant, always looking down on people. This isn’t far from the truth, really-- she does distance herself from people, seeing the world in shades of herself vs. everyone else. With the ability to read minds, Miu from a very young age has been able to know a person’s real thoughts and feelings, which has made her grow up jaded. She often finds herself disgusted with the way humanity lies and hides behind fakeness and more lies on top of it all just to get through the day.
This doesn’t mean Miu is honest entirely herself. She’s blunt and less inclined to pretty up her truthbombs than most, but she still omits truths and doesn’t readily volunteer information about herself; she describes herself as being “empty,” and that because of that she can become anything--she doesn’t care much about herself, so she just does whatever she’s told without much feeling or emotion behind what it is she’s doing. She despises people and their ‘ugliness’ they hide and trusts no one but herself. She simply doesn’t care and doesn’t feel particularly moved by most things. She’s an aspiring actress who does work as a gravure model and has been making strides landing small roles and has a lot of promise. This is because slipping in and out of roles and wearing masks, faking emotions and, ironically since it’s what she hates, lying is what she’s best at.
Despite that, there are some exceptions to what motivates and moves her. She’s driven mostly by the feelings of abandonment and confusion that stems from her mother abandoning her, since Miu doesn’t know or understand why she was left behind. This is what starts her drive to seek her mother out, hoping for answers. It’s through this journey that she meets Yuri, someone much like herself and who she feels she can actually connect with, and begins to feel a little alive again. She learns to care for Yuri and tentatively reaches out to the other girl. She’s abrasive at first, rather haughtily telling Yuri that her powers far exceed Yuri’s and explaining she’s had these abilities all her life. She’s shown to be determined and driven when she sets her mind to something, such as when Yuri goes missing and Miu throws off Ren’s worries. Ren repeatedly attempts to warn and stop Miu, with Miu simply bulldozing over the worries by casually continuing to speak, saying hat she’s taking the camera and going up on the mountain. She’s also not above striking low-- when Ren grabs her in an attempt to physically stop her, Miu catches a glimpse of one of Ren’s darkest memories and callously asks him, “Did you kill that girl?” to throw him off balance before she again states she’s going up on the mountain and leaves.
Because of her abilities, Miu also doesn’t have much of a sense of fear. She does still get scared of things popping out at her, of course, but she’s been seeing the broken, twisted spirits of the dead since she was tiny, so it hardly fazes her anymore. Her biggest fear is being alone-- That is, that the reason her mother abandoned her was because she was unwanted and she’s afraid of always being unwanted and alone.

Inventory: Extremely strong spiritual powers, which comes with the ability to see and speak with spirits. She also has a special ability that, when using the Camera Obscura, allows her to temporarily slow time for a few seconds.
Able to see a person’s thoughts, emotions, and delve into their memories with a touch. She’s almost constantly aware of someone’s true feelings, though she tends to just let it wash over her without really digging further.
Kagemi: Shadow Reading. The ability to see the secrets of objects when handling them, and involves following the "shadows" of the past, of missing things or spirited away people. For example if someone was missing a ring, having the ring box means Miu could track down and locate the ring. Having just a photo of a missing person enables Miu to track that person down. Typically she can manage to track them far enough, but if they really don't want to be found then the trail might go cold eventually or get 'fuzzy,' leaving her unable to find the person. To quote one of the memos about it: The traces will attract malevolent ghosts, so it is dangerous to spend too long gazing at them. Yet another risk lies in following the trace of a person who has already died or has been spirited away, as you may be inadvertently following them into the world of the dead.
Mitori: Glancing (mitori) in Fatal Frame V is the ability to touch a spirit at the moment of defeat and witness a vision of its last moments. This sort of ties into the above of seeing a person’s thoughts and emotions and such.

Essentially it's a camera that allows anyone to "see the impossible" and capture it on film. One can capture spirits on the film, but it can also let someone capture an image of what an area used to look like. For example, if taking a picture of an old battlefield. Despite it being clear to the naked eye, the picture might show the battlefield full of weapons, bodies, or other signs of battle.
If there's a locked door, a picture of it might show an image of the area the key is, or something that needs to be destroyed or collected before the door will open.
(This isn't a guaranteed thing or something that always happens, it's sort of "as needed" and something I'd always ask about first if there's something she could pick up).
It can harm spirits/supernatural creatures whose picture is taken by the camera. The film has exorcism power with stronger film meaning stronger attacks, but they are finite amounts of those films. The lowest exorcism film is automatically part of the camera and unlimited and Miu would be bringing no additional film in with her.
