Apps will open on June 23rd at 11:59 am EST

Player Cap: 30/70

RESERVES | APPS

Before you submit your application, please review the Applications and Reserves section of the info / faq page, as there are additional rules regarding malleable protagonists, CRAU characters, fandom OCs, canon caps, player caps, and other important things to note.

Applications will be processed in the order they are received and after the application cycle closes. We will only accept as many players as we have player slots, however, we will review all applications submitted during the cycle. Application cycles are not first come first serve, and instead will be judged on clarity of the app and samples.

Application revisions will have three days to submit adjustments. If not submitted in time, they will have to wait until the next application cycle to resubmit.

Application rejections will have to wait until the next application cycle to resubmit unless otherwise specified in the original rejection.

You may either post your application in a comment to this post, or link to it from your character journal.

Please use the following format for your comment in the subject line:
CHARACTER | CANON | RESERVED / NOT RESERVED

There is a limit of 2 characters initially maximum that can be played. (You can redeem additional character slots by way of the rewards page.) As with reservations, you may apply for 2 characters at a time.

Proxy applications are not accepted.

We do not accept application challenges.

We do not accept duplicate characters.

We only accept applications for 1 malleable protagonist in a cast. Malleable protagonists may not have preexisting relationships with other characters from their canon aside from base storyline. (Exceptions will potentially be made for CRAUs and handled on a case-by-case basis.)

Fandom OC characters are accepted, but may not have preexisting relationships with other characters from their canon. (Exceptions will potentially be made for CRAUs and handled on a case-by-case basis.)

CRAU characters are accepted, however, must not be so removed from their original canon state that they are unrecognisable. CRAU characters who carry a multitude of prior games may only carry over memories, relationships, and experiences from their most recent game.

Crime: All characters are accused of a crime upon their arrival, and it's printed on their indestructible parchment. This crime can be fitting of your character or ill-fitting. It can be a crime they've committed or a crime they would never commit. Consider that Expiation's definition of crimes may not mirror reflect what we think of when we consider crime in the real world. Feel free to think a little out of the box and more abstract. Fiction versus reality here doesn't so much make a difference. Please choose one crime, bearing in mind that there may be occasions in which the crime chosen could affect how a character interacts with certain events or situations.

Background: You may provide a link to a wiki, for canon characters. If your wiki has limited information, or your character may not have much canon behind them, you are expected to write supplemental details without leaning too heavily into headcanon. For OCs, you don't need to provide an overly verbose background, just enough to give an accurate portrayal of the world they come from and definitive experiences that are important to their character. For CRAUS, please specify additional information about what they are carrying over from their prior game. This can also be limited to definitive experiences and relationships.

Personality: Although this game heavily relies on the analysis and reflection of a character, we don't expect a dissertation. Please provide information on your character's motivations, how their relationships and experiences have affected or shaped them, and other related information. You may use character dialogue to further showcase this, but it's not expected. If you find it easier to use bullet point formats, feel free to do that. Please do not exceed 800 words.

Abilities: If your character has any special abilities (magic, weapon skills, and so on), please list them here. Remember that world-breaking abilities will be diluted.

Inventory: A list of inventory that your character is carrying on them can be put here. Characters will not have access to an infinite hammer space, so please only list things that would make sense for your character to be physically carrying.

Samples: Two recent samples from the last year are required and must adequately convey a character's voice. In a thread, we prefer at least five comments from you. At least one sample must be from the current TDM post. Other threads may be taken from bakerstreet, other games, or other memes.

During application review, not only will we be judging for characterization, but also longevity and completion of threads. Not all threads have to be finished before being submitted, but the mod team would like to see an effort in furthering the thread if it's not completed.

Questions: If you have any questions for the mod team, please include them here and we will address them during the processing of your application.

Character Name: Gundam Tanaka
Character Canon: Danganronpa
Canon Point: Conclusion of Chapter 4
Age: 18

Crime: Gundam's a liar. Due to feelings of insecurity stemming from his youth Gundam can't bring himself to be upfront about anything. He lies about his name, his title, his hobbies. Everything he says is cloaked in an absurd lie. He can't stand to be honest with anyone, especially himself. It's detrimental to every facet of his life and I think it would be fun to explore more.

Background: https://danganronpa.fandom.com/wiki/Gundham_Tanaka

Personality: Gundam grew up as an only child and because of the circumstances of his birth, neither the paternal or maternal sides of his family or even his father acknowledged his existence and ostracized him. His mother raised Gundam as a single parent. Gundam grew up feeling like an unwanted outsider by society and also never really developed any strong relationships with anyone outside of his mother, who he loves very dearly.

Because of his isolated upbringing, he grew up avoiding social situations and physical interaction with others. He continues to struggle to relate to other people and even benign physical intimacy as a result. Where he was unable to bond with human beings, led him to develop his interest in forming bonds with animals. Gundam created an exciting and unique personality for himself based on evil powers and the occult. At first the things he says seem to just be cryptic rantings. Yet if you look between the lines of the lies and over dramatizations; there's a small kernel of truth to everything he says.

In his canon universe it is tremendously important for individuals to have a unique talent. Gundam’s talent as the Super High School Level: Animal Breeder is what distinguishes him from everyone else in the world. Because of Gundam’s talent he is invited to attend Hope’s Peak Academy, which is a prestigious school devoted to finding and shaping young talented individuals into a future of Hope.

Gundam remembers showing up to school, but never actually getting to experience Hope's Peak Academy at all. Gundam ends up trapped in a virtual simulation with his classmates. Initially the goal was for Gundam and the other students to grow and bond together as friends. However, the simulation is manipulated and transformed into a murder game where the students were pitted against one another for survival. This is the first time that Gundam could recall that he was really forced to be around such a big group of people with no escape. As a result he became quite attached to his classmates and the more time he spent with them, the more he wanted to protect and befriend them.

Gundam's desire to protect the friends he'd grown close to is what ultimately leads to his demise. Eventually Gundam and the others remaining become trapped in a fun house with no means of escape nor food to sustain themselves. None of them are permitted to leave and none of them will be permitted any food until a murder is committed by someone in the group. After Hajime declares that he would rather starve and die than ever kill one of his friends, Gundam realizes that without a murder everyone is going to die and no one will be saved. In that moment, Gundam realizes that in order to save the majority of his friends from perishing, he has to become the blackened and has to kill someone.

Gundam creates an intricate and elaborate murder plot and lures Nekomaru Nidai into a duel to the death. Gundam left opportunities for Nekomaru to decline the fight and escape, but he is able to recognize Gundam's true intent and chooses to fight to the death. It's a fair fight in which either one could have been the victim or the murderer. Gundam ultimately wins, murdering Nekomaru. The risky methods Gundam uses to commit his crime, that he's not ultimately concerned with surviving this ordeal. He's doing this for the benefit of the group at large.

Gundam actually confesses to the crime in the first few minutes of his trial, outing himself as the "Ultimate Weapon," but given his propensity for theatrics no one takes him seriously. Eventually it becomes clear that because of a flawed alibi, Gundam was the only one who could have committed the murder. Gundam doesn't offer much of a defense of himself until he's prompted by Sonia to do so and even then his arguments are weak and simple to strike down. It's only when it's suggested that Gundam attacked Nekomaru dishonorably that he begins to argue back. Still devoted to his evil Overlord persona , Gundam encourages all his remaining friends to condemn him for his crime with no hesitation.

Gundam praises his fallen friend as courageous for dying when someone here needed to die to prevent everyone else from starving. Gundam admonishes the rest of the group for simply giving up and resigning themselves to their own deaths, hoping to inspire them to fight against their circumstances going forward no matter what. Eventually his classmates realize that Gundam had much kinder intentions than he would ever admit. He committed murder so no one else would have to and he sacrificed himself as the blackened to give everyone left a future they would fight for.

Abilities: In his canon universe it is tremendously important for individuals to have a unique talent.

Gundam’s talent is titled the Super High School Level Animal Breeder and involves working with and understanding animals in a capacity that no one else in the world has managed. Gundam deeply loves and cares for animals, liking and respecting them even above human beings who he holds in low regard. What makes Gundam unique from other breeders and animal lovers is that he’s literally able to communicate with and in turn understand animals. He's successfully bred species back from the brink of extinction and he’s been able to tame any animal, even the most wild, with his abilities. Since Gundam has such a hard time relating to people, it's through animals that he's able to express how loving, caring, and nurturing he truly is beneath his Supreme Overlord persona. Animals have made a significant impact on his life and his most favorite things in the world are his Four Dark Devas of Destruction – four hamsters that he's actually trained to live on his person.
