APPLICATIONS
Player Cap: 29/70
Before you submit your application, please review the Applications and Reserves section of the info / faq page, as there are additional rules regarding malleable protagonists, CRAU characters, fandom OCs, canon caps, player caps, and other important things to note. Applications will be processed in the order they are received and after the application cycle closes. We will only accept as many players as we have player slots, however, we will review all applications submitted during the cycle. Application cycles are not first come first serve, and instead will be judged on clarity of the app and samples. Application revisions will have three days to submit adjustments. If not submitted in time, they will have to wait until the next application cycle to resubmit. Application rejections will have to wait until the next application cycle to resubmit unless otherwise specified in the original rejection. You may either post your application in a comment to this post, or link to it from your character journal. Please use the following format for your comment in the subject line: CHARACTER | CANON | RESERVED / NOT RESERVED There is a limit of 2 characters initially maximum that can be played. (You can redeem additional character slots by way of the rewards page.) As with reservations, you may apply for 2 characters at a time. Proxy applications are not accepted. We do not accept application challenges. We do not accept duplicate characters. We only accept applications for 1 malleable protagonist in a cast. Malleable protagonists may not have preexisting relationships with other characters from their canon aside from base storyline. (Exceptions will potentially be made for CRAUs and handled on a case-by-case basis.) Fandom OC characters are accepted, but may not have preexisting relationships with other characters from their canon. (Exceptions will potentially be made for CRAUs and handled on a case-by-case basis.) CRAU characters are accepted, however, must not be so removed from their original canon state that they are unrecognisable. CRAU characters who carry a multitude of prior games may only carry over memories, relationships, and experiences from their most recent game. |
APPLICATION FORM
Player: Contact: Age: Current Characters: If applicable. Character Name: Character Canon: If applicable. Canon Point: Age: Crime: All characters are accused of a crime upon their arrival, and it's printed on their indestructible parchment. This crime can be fitting of your character or ill-fitting. It can be a crime they've committed or a crime they would never commit. Consider that Expiation's definition of crimes may not mirror reflect what we think of when we consider crime in the real world. Feel free to think a little out of the box and more abstract. Fiction versus reality here doesn't so much make a difference. Please choose one crime, bearing in mind that there may be occasions in which the crime chosen could affect how a character interacts with certain events or situations. Background: You may provide a link to a wiki, for canon characters. If your wiki has limited information, or your character may not have much canon behind them, you are expected to write supplemental details without leaning too heavily into headcanon. For OCs, you don't need to provide an overly verbose background, just enough to give an accurate portrayal of the world they come from and definitive experiences that are important to their character. For CRAUS, please specify additional information about what they are carrying over from their prior game. This can also be limited to definitive experiences and relationships. Personality: Although this game heavily relies on the analysis and reflection of a character, we don't expect a dissertation. Please provide information on your character's motivations, how their relationships and experiences have affected or shaped them, and other related information. You may use character dialogue to further showcase this, but it's not expected. If you find it easier to use bullet point formats, feel free to do that. Please do not exceed 800 words. Abilities: If your character has any special abilities (magic, weapon skills, and so on), please list them here. Remember that world-breaking abilities will be diluted. Inventory: A list of inventory that your character is carrying on them can be put here. Characters will not have access to an infinite hammer space, so please only list things that would make sense for your character to be physically carrying. Samples: Two recent samples from the last year are required and must adequately convey a character's voice. In a thread, we prefer at least five comments from you. At least one sample must be from the current TDM post. Other threads may be taken from bakerstreet, other games, or other memes. During application review, not only will we be judging for characterization, but also longevity and completion of threads. Not all threads have to be finished before being submitted, but the mod team would like to see an effort in furthering the thread if it's not completed. Questions: If you have any questions for the mod team, please include them here and we will address them during the processing of your application. |

REVISIONS REQUESTED
- We would like for you to elaborate more on the character's Rift ability. What is it, how does it work, etc.
- We would also like some elaboration on their personality. You describe some of how they are, but we would like to know more about why, as well as how they feel about certain elements of their personality (ie how do they feel about lacking a stable identity, and how does this make them view others around them who do have one). Some example questions to get you going include: how do they choose who they kill and why? If they lack emotions, what keeps them attached to a situation, place, or plotline? What gets them involved? What drives their obsessiveness (interest? hatred? fixation? etc)?
Please note that you have 3 days to submit your revisions. If you miss this timeline, you will have to wait until the next application cycle (February 2024) to resubmit.
Re: REVISIONS REQUESTED
The Rift is a spirit realm in Avalon’s world, and it created Passengers. Anyone with magical abilities, human or not, can access it. While almost nothing from the physical world penetrates it, emotions do. While inside the Rift, Avalon will sense others’ emotions whether they want to or not. Emotions can also be “tracked” to their owners from inside, whether they belong to people outside or inside. When someone leaves by following the emotions of another, they appear in the general vicinity of the person they followed. When someone leaves without following the emotions of another, they leave in the same way they entered but appear in a random place in the real world, like walking blindly through a door. Within it, one’s physical body disappears and they take the form of an opaque, intangible human silhouette. Anyone inside can’t be sensed from outside it, even with magic, and effectively doesn’t exist to the outside world. Anyone with magic can access the Rift accidentally through dissociation, ad eventually learn to access it on purpose. Avalon uses the Rift as a portal to transport them to their targets. It also alters the magic of people inside. Generally, abilities that require a physical body, like shapeshifting, won’t work at all. The functions of mental abilities are changed in some way, and people using those abilities will risk dissociation or loss of their sense of self. Avalon can also use their silhouette form outside the Rift for possession or to become intangible.
The driving force behind much of Avalon’s personality is their constant sense of emptiness. They want to understand and fill their internal void. Their personality traits are pieced together from their victims, and they see those traits as tools rather than a personality of their own. They don’t understand emotions well enough to recognize that they aren’t completely unfeeling. They recognize that they’re missing something, and they understand that the way they experience emotions isn’t complete. They are blind to their true emotional experience and self-identify as a being who can’t feel. While they’ve learned that Passengers lack a stable identity, they still don’t know why. They are drawn to people who have suicidal thoughts and urges, because those people often feel like they have no purpose or no reason to exist, similar to Avalon’s own experience. These are the people that they kill. In the early decades of their existence, Avalon fixated on people who wanted to end their own lives because they saw their own emptiness in their victims. They tried to understand their earlier victims because they thought they could use human experiences to understand their situation. When this failed, Avalon decided to use their murders as a purpose. Since their original method worked for them, they kept doing it. They lack strong enough morals and empathy to care that murder is wrong.
My revised app is over here. Thank you for the opportunity to revise!
