APPLICATIONS
Apps will open on June 23rd at 11:59 am EST
Player Cap: 52/70
Before you submit your application, please review the Applications and Reserves section of the info / faq page, as there are additional rules regarding malleable protagonists, CRAU characters, fandom OCs, canon caps, player caps, and other important things to note. Applications will be processed in the order they are received and after the application cycle closes. We will only accept as many players as we have player slots, however, we will review all applications submitted during the cycle. Application cycles are not first come first serve, and instead will be judged on clarity of the app and samples. Application revisions will have three days to submit adjustments. If not submitted in time, they will have to wait until the next application cycle to resubmit. Application rejections will have to wait until the next application cycle to resubmit unless otherwise specified in the original rejection. You may either post your application in a comment to this post, or link to it from your character journal. Please use the following format for your comment in the subject line: CHARACTER | CANON | RESERVED / NOT RESERVED There is a limit of 2 characters initially maximum that can be played. (You can redeem additional character slots by way of the rewards page.) As with reservations, you may apply for 2 characters at a time. Proxy applications are not accepted. We do not accept application challenges. We do not accept duplicate characters. We only accept applications for 1 malleable protagonist in a cast. Malleable protagonists may not have preexisting relationships with other characters from their canon aside from base storyline. (Exceptions will potentially be made for CRAUs and handled on a case-by-case basis.) Fandom OC characters are accepted, but may not have preexisting relationships with other characters from their canon. (Exceptions will potentially be made for CRAUs and handled on a case-by-case basis.) CRAU characters are accepted, however, must not be so removed from their original canon state that they are unrecognisable. CRAU characters who carry a multitude of prior games may only carry over memories, relationships, and experiences from their most recent game. |
APPLICATION FORM
Player: Contact: Age: Current Characters: If applicable. Character Name: Character Canon: If applicable. Canon Point: Age: Crime: All characters are accused of a crime upon their arrival, and it's printed on their indestructible parchment. This crime can be fitting of your character or ill-fitting. It can be a crime they've committed or a crime they would never commit. Consider that Expiation's definition of crimes may not mirror reflect what we think of when we consider crime in the real world. Feel free to think a little out of the box and more abstract. Fiction versus reality here doesn't so much make a difference. Please choose one crime, bearing in mind that there may be occasions in which the crime chosen could affect how a character interacts with certain events or situations. Background: You may provide a link to a wiki, for canon characters. If your wiki has limited information, or your character may not have much canon behind them, you are expected to write supplemental details without leaning too heavily into headcanon. For OCs, you don't need to provide an overly verbose background, just enough to give an accurate portrayal of the world they come from and definitive experiences that are important to their character. For CRAUS, please specify additional information about what they are carrying over from their prior game. This can also be limited to definitive experiences and relationships. Personality: Although this game heavily relies on the analysis and reflection of a character, we don't expect a dissertation. Please provide information on your character's motivations, how their relationships and experiences have affected or shaped them, and other related information. You may use character dialogue to further showcase this, but it's not expected. If you find it easier to use bullet point formats, feel free to do that. Please do not exceed 800 words. Abilities: If your character has any special abilities (magic, weapon skills, and so on), please list them here. Remember that world-breaking abilities will be diluted. Inventory: A list of inventory that your character is carrying on them can be put here. Characters will not have access to an infinite hammer space, so please only list things that would make sense for your character to be physically carrying. Samples: Two recent samples from the last year are required and must adequately convey a character's voice. In a thread, we prefer at least five comments from you. At least one sample must be from the current TDM post. Other threads may be taken from bakerstreet, other games, or other memes. During application review, not only will we be judging for characterization, but also longevity and completion of threads. Not all threads have to be finished before being submitted, but the mod team would like to see an effort in furthering the thread if it's not completed. Questions: If you have any questions for the mod team, please include them here and we will address them during the processing of your application. |
saralegui | kyou kara maou! | not reserved
Contact:
Age: 32
Current Characters: Rolo Lamperouge
Character Name: Saralegui
Character Canon: Kyou Kara Maou!
Canon Point: End of season 3 episode 36
Age: 17
Crime: Perfidy
Background: The wiki is extremely barebones but I have a whole background writeup over here.
Personality: By all outward appearances, Saralegui is just the young and charismatic king of the country of Small Shimaron. He's fair in his rule, intelligent and responsible despite his age, and well-liked by his people. He's kind and charming and strives for peace – the sort of king that really cares about his people, rather than simply enjoying the luxury that such power brings.
In reality, however, Saralegui is a manipulative schemer. He plays nice with others not out of genuine kindheartedness, but because keeping up a good reputation helps him most in the cutthroat politics of his world. Saralegui doesn't shy away from using others to accomplish his goals and he's both intelligent enough and powerful enough to get away with it – "powerful" in this case referring less to his rank and more to the hypnotic magic he can work with his eyes. He doesn't even need that much of the time though, more interested in the challenge of doing things the old-fashioned way. When asked why he goes to extremes like orchestrating his own near-death to manipulate the protagonist when he could simply use his powers for the same purpose, Saralegui simply answers that it's more fun going without it. He's extremely intelligent, plotting moves out far in advance and predicting the moves on others accurately in order to make all his plotting work, and with his hypnotic abilities to fall back on, he's willing to make extremely risky gambles that always seem to work out for him in the end. It seems like having his powers to fall back on just makes him bold and almost reckless, always confident that he can just sidestep any real danger with his mind-control if things don't go his way.
It isn't a lie that he cares for his country, but even that has a selfish root – he grew up almost entirely ignored by his father and it created a craving for acknowledgement and attention in him, a spiteful need to be a greater king than his father was. Between that apparent indifference from his father and his mother having been entirely absent from his life, he has something of an abandonment complex. And going from feeling so completely unwanted to having people vying for his favor as a king has left him deeply jaded – people always have ulterior motives, as far as he's concerned, and the concept of love is a pretty lie. How could he believe in something like that, after all, when his own parents, the people who should have loved him unconditionally and before all others, wanted nothing to do with him?
On a casual level, he ranges from sincerely affable to incredibly two-faced. He's very focused on appearances and often lies or sticks to polite surface interactions to maintain that persona of a sweet and pleasant young ruler, but it's not as if everything he does always has such ulterior motives. He's very much capable of being friendly and getting along with others, and when there are no high stakes involved he can actually be pretty great for intelligent conversation or flirting or joking around. As long as things remain on a lighthearted surface level, he can be fairly genuine and likable without issue – it's getting deeper than that where things can get messy.
The only person he trusts absolutely is his bodyguard, Belias, and that's a trust built up over more than a decade of loyal servitude, and Belias entered his life early enough that Saralegui was still young and desperate enough to cling to whatever attention he was given. He takes that trust to an extreme, even putting his life in his bodyguard's skilled hands (and not just in the sense of protection, but even intentionally shooting him with a goddamn arrow). For everyone else, however, he's skeptical of others as a rule and prone to suspecting people of having ulterior motives than simply accepting the kindness of a stranger.
Despite everything he's done, Saralegui isn't exactly a villain. He does bad things, sometimes cruel things, but his intentions are at least somewhat decent. He has a very "ends justify the means" attitude, which is why he could so easily trick his only friend, the pacifistic Yuuri, into destroying entire armies for him on two separate occasions – it might hurt Yuuri, yes, but it gets rid of the threat of Large Shimaron's forces without having to send a single soldier into battle, and if it manages to kill off Large Shimaron's king in the process, then that just means he can claim the throne himself and definitely end all the fighting between humans and demons.
Abilities:
- He has a power that allows him to more or less hypnotize other people. It seems to require eye contact (at least initially) and as he always removes his glasses before using it, most likely can't penetrate even transparent surfaces. The commands given don't have to be verbal, and resistance to them is based on willpower, but it should be noted that the ability is very powerful, with only the Demon King ever being shown actually breaking free from it. He doesn't seem to like abusing this power, however, as it's only ever brought out in situations he can't somehow manipulate through other means.
- According to the novels, he can see in the dark.
Inventory:
- The Divine Sword of Seisakoku, a powerful magic sword that can apparently only be used at all by half-humans (but only Saralegui has been able to truly control it and make full use of its power). It normally provides life-energy to a whole country and that same power can use used for things like healing, pouring magic energy into a person, and rapid growth of plantlife for miles around, as well as creating a magic barrier and teleporting across a city for some reason. The sword's abilities are pretty vague and wide in scope and we only see it do most of these things like once, but fortunately Saralegui is not very inclined to making frequent use of such powers 🙃

Questions: Please let me know if any nerfing is required! Between his basically-an-unlimited-Geass and the magic sword, I would understand completely lol
