APPLICATIONS
Player Cap: 29/70
Before you submit your application, please review the Applications and Reserves section of the info / faq page, as there are additional rules regarding malleable protagonists, CRAU characters, fandom OCs, canon caps, player caps, and other important things to note. Applications will be processed in the order they are received and after the application cycle closes. We will only accept as many players as we have player slots, however, we will review all applications submitted during the cycle. Application cycles are not first come first serve, and instead will be judged on clarity of the app and samples. Application revisions will have three days to submit adjustments. If not submitted in time, they will have to wait until the next application cycle to resubmit. Application rejections will have to wait until the next application cycle to resubmit unless otherwise specified in the original rejection. You may either post your application in a comment to this post, or link to it from your character journal. Please use the following format for your comment in the subject line: CHARACTER | CANON | RESERVED / NOT RESERVED There is a limit of 2 characters initially maximum that can be played. (You can redeem additional character slots by way of the rewards page.) As with reservations, you may apply for 2 characters at a time. Proxy applications are not accepted. We do not accept application challenges. We do not accept duplicate characters. We only accept applications for 1 malleable protagonist in a cast. Malleable protagonists may not have preexisting relationships with other characters from their canon aside from base storyline. (Exceptions will potentially be made for CRAUs and handled on a case-by-case basis.) Fandom OC characters are accepted, but may not have preexisting relationships with other characters from their canon. (Exceptions will potentially be made for CRAUs and handled on a case-by-case basis.) CRAU characters are accepted, however, must not be so removed from their original canon state that they are unrecognisable. CRAU characters who carry a multitude of prior games may only carry over memories, relationships, and experiences from their most recent game. |
APPLICATION FORM
Player: Contact: Age: Current Characters: If applicable. Character Name: Character Canon: If applicable. Canon Point: Age: Crime: All characters are accused of a crime upon their arrival, and it's printed on their indestructible parchment. This crime can be fitting of your character or ill-fitting. It can be a crime they've committed or a crime they would never commit. Consider that Expiation's definition of crimes may not mirror reflect what we think of when we consider crime in the real world. Feel free to think a little out of the box and more abstract. Fiction versus reality here doesn't so much make a difference. Please choose one crime, bearing in mind that there may be occasions in which the crime chosen could affect how a character interacts with certain events or situations. Background: You may provide a link to a wiki, for canon characters. If your wiki has limited information, or your character may not have much canon behind them, you are expected to write supplemental details without leaning too heavily into headcanon. For OCs, you don't need to provide an overly verbose background, just enough to give an accurate portrayal of the world they come from and definitive experiences that are important to their character. For CRAUS, please specify additional information about what they are carrying over from their prior game. This can also be limited to definitive experiences and relationships. Personality: Although this game heavily relies on the analysis and reflection of a character, we don't expect a dissertation. Please provide information on your character's motivations, how their relationships and experiences have affected or shaped them, and other related information. You may use character dialogue to further showcase this, but it's not expected. If you find it easier to use bullet point formats, feel free to do that. Please do not exceed 800 words. Abilities: If your character has any special abilities (magic, weapon skills, and so on), please list them here. Remember that world-breaking abilities will be diluted. Inventory: A list of inventory that your character is carrying on them can be put here. Characters will not have access to an infinite hammer space, so please only list things that would make sense for your character to be physically carrying. Samples: Two recent samples from the last year are required and must adequately convey a character's voice. In a thread, we prefer at least five comments from you. At least one sample must be from the current TDM post. Other threads may be taken from bakerstreet, other games, or other memes. During application review, not only will we be judging for characterization, but also longevity and completion of threads. Not all threads have to be finished before being submitted, but the mod team would like to see an effort in furthering the thread if it's not completed. Questions: If you have any questions for the mod team, please include them here and we will address them during the processing of your application. |
Leonard McCoy | Star Trek (AOS) | Reserved
Contact: PM ;
Age: 40
Current Characters: N/A
Character Name: Leonard McCoy
Character Canon: Star Trek (AOS)
Canon Point: Mid-Beyond, during Krall's initial attack
Age: 36
Crime: Necromancy; violating the laws of Nature to resurrect Jim Kirk
Background: Wiki
Personality:
Blunt vs Compassionate
"Did they teach you bedside manner in medical school?" Kirk asks of Bones, the question that many, many have probably pondered after meeting the man. Bones isn't afraid to tell someone his opinion, both in and outside of a medically-related context, and most of the time he's not about to sugarcoat it. Sometimes irascible, and incredibly passionate, Bones doesn't suffer fools lightly, and isn't the easiest guy to get along with. However, for better or worse, he knows it.
At his core, under all the bluster and snark, Bones has a heart of gold. In ST '09, he gently tends to patients following the destruction of Vulcan. Into Darkness shows his benevolence extends even to those he disdains, determined to keep the sleeping Augments from harm, and handling Khan with care.
Phobic vs Courageous
"Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence" is a memorable line espoused by Bones in the first film. "[Yorktown Station] looks like a giant snowglobe in space just waiting to break," is another in Beyond, and both give a pretty good insight into Bones's cautious nature. If something looks off, he's gonna let you know how sketchy he finds it, and very possibly come up with a solid idea of how shit could go horribly FUBAR. While this personality quirk of his straddles the funny/frustrating line, it's probably related to his (unsure if self-diagnosed) aviophobia. "It means fear of dying in something that flies!"
Despite that, Bones is not about to let his anxieties stop him. A regular member of away teams, something he could readily delegate to a subordinate, he's ready (though maybe not always willing) to throw himself into danger for the sake of others, showing courage in the face of his fear. Bones had teamed up with Spock during Krall's attack on the Enterprise, leaving the bridge to see to any injured crew. Shortly afterward, he and Spock will get stuck in a turbolift that's unintentionally jettisoned into space... and then promptly hijacked the drone ship that attempts to take him and Spock captive.
Later, faced with the potential of capture and/or painful death, he bellows a challenge to Krall's forces, and he's not only part of the rescue team for the rest of the crew, he's right out front protecting them as Scotty works to get them all transported up.
Cantankerous Asshole vs Loyal Friend
Stubborn as fuck, opinionated, irascible and tenacious, McCoy will stick to his guns and argue until he's blue in the face. In Prime canon, McCoy is a man who literally gets into a morality argument with a god (and declares why They can't possibly be God because of it), so he's generally up for an argument wherever and whenever. He can come off as obnoxious for it, prone to needlessly moralizing, and up for holding a grudge if it comes down to it. While McCoy's relationship with his ex is all amicable respect these years later, he was very clear about his disdain for her in the early days of their divorce, even with his acknowledgment of his own failures. His first real conversation with Spock, after Jim was ejected from the Enterprise, is laced with scathing disapproval.
Despite this, his close relationships tend to flourish. Having known Kirk now for several years, their friendship is strong and solid, proven from the moment Bones stuck his friend with a vaccine and hauled him aboard the Enterprise. Among those he respects, and who respect him in turn, he's charming, funny, and dedicated, though he's still not all sunny disposition- Bones is not about to pat their asses if he thinks they need to hear the truth. Butting heads is all part of the experience, because his loyalty to them, as far as he's concerned, goes unquestioned. Spock's awkward attempts to tell him of his own respect go about as well as you'd think- "I know, Spock, you don't need to say it" -and Kirk's death in Into Darkness shatters him. In the latter case, loss kicks him into high gear for the chance to bring his friend back.
"That's me, Mr Sensitive", he tells Kirk in an intimate conversation, having assured his friend of his worth and purpose in Starfleet. Later, he has an equally close convo with Spock, learning of the death of his alternate-universe counterpart, and his plans to leave Starfleet. In both instances, Bones trades in his prickly shell for understanding and sympathy-- though he's still quick to assume the worst when Spock is moved to laughter.
Oh, and Mr Sensitive still throws a surprise birthday party for his BFF anyway. Aww.
Abilities:
A 100% baseline human, McCoy is a medical doctor and member of Starfleet. After an initial start in an Earth hospital, his move into Starfleet prepared him with the experience and knowledge to treat a wide variety of human and alien ailments that might occur on a starship that visits other worlds. While officially he's a neurosurgeon, with a secondary specialty in trauma, as Chief Medical Officer, Lt. Commander McCoy leads the Enterprise's medical department, a senior officers' position that requires solid leadership, diplomatic, and people skills, and a great degree of coordination with others both inside and outside his department.
McCoy is proficient in hand to hand combat, and is also a decent shot with a phaser, despite his distaste of bothβ they were a required course, but he didn't have to like them. At the Academy, he also undertook survival training, and enough command track courses in tactics and navigation to qualify as a helmsman for Kirk's run at the Kobayashi Maru.
While he has flight training, and is a capable pilot, he'd prefer to be anyone's last-of-the-last-choices for this, ever.
Lastly, he has experience in animal handling, as shown in Into Darkness, which. Okay!
