bestiary: fauna of aldrip [WIP]

🞀 ENCYCLOPEDIA (Flora) 🔖 BESTIARY (Fauna) 🞂

BESTIARY: FAUNA OF ALDRIP

As the majority of characters are from Earth or some version of it, there are mostly Earth-related animals. Wildlife, birds, domesticated animals, and lifestock may be found fairly easily. The only animals that are off limits to taking for yourself are the ones that are on Astralin's farm. Otherwise, they're free game.

Below are some of the fauna that might be found around the game.

Navigate:
NATIVE SPECIES 📖 NONNATIVE SPECIES

NATIVE SPECIES
Covers more generic species that are not specific or limited to Aldrip or any one world. Unless stated otherwise, they are relatively commonly found.
Index
BOARS The ones that have thusfar been discovered on Expiation are typically found at higher altitudes in the Crinot Mountains, but there are some who have wandered too close to Aldrip. Like many species, they are territorial and protective of their young.
▲ INDEX
CATS Stray feline critters that can be either somewhat curious or very skittish. They can be seen anywhere there is trash or food to be found; especially near the seaside hut where fish and seafood is cooked. They sometimes get into fights with the dogs... And those who are very observant and have been here for several months may notice that there are fewer than there were before.
▲ INDEX
CHICKENS Both hens and roosters can be found in the Meadowlands and on Astralin's farm, in his chicken coop. Only the wild ones are available to catch and eat; the ones at the farm are protected.
▲ INDEX
CROWS Can be found... literally anywhere. Just listen for their harsh caws, and watch for their dark, black feathers. They are highly intelligent birds who are social, and so are often found in groups or pairs rather than not. They love seeds and fruit.
▲ INDEX
DOGS Cute canine strays of varying breeds and coats that can be seen near restaurants, but also the beach in general. Some will avoid strangers, but others are not shy about lounging in the sand, soaking up sun or even digging for their next meal. Some will get into fights with the cats over food.
▲ INDEX
HORSES Magnificent steeds that can be used for riding, if they can be tamed. They can be found in the Meadowlands, with a few on Astralin's farm, either grazing or in the stables.
▲ INDEX
THE KRAKEN A large creature that lives in the ocean near Aldrip's shore. While no one has fully seen the creature's large squid-like body, there are multiple sightings of its tentacles! Especially when anyone, no matter Chosen or native, throws something in the water that doesn't quite belong there. The creature will flick the potential trash right back at the offender in retaliation.

On sunny days, it might bring the tentacles up close to surface to warm up! It's a nice monster.
▲ INDEX
SHEEP Found mainly in the Meadowlands and Astralin's farm. Their thick wool can be sheered and used by Rin's tailor shop in exchange for clothes. Some are more difficult to handle than others.
▲ INDEX
WOLVES If you see a wolf, its pack probably isn't too far behind. They sometimes hunt for pray in the mountains, but sometimes wander close to Aldrip. They are playful and caring toward their own kind, but can be territorial and should be approached with caution.

NATIVE SPECIES 📖 NONNATIVE SPECIES

NONNATIVE SPECIES
As characters from different worlds appear, so too will various creatures from those worlds. Fauna that come from canons represented in the game will be more common, but others may pop up from time to time as well. Players are encouraged to leave a comment and submit new species from their canons to be added to the bestiary.
Index
AMBYSTOMA Canon: Final Fantasy XIV

Can be found anywhere. They are deceptively cute little creatures who may decide to follow you around. Very, very, very rarely can be found large enough to be a mount.
▲ INDEX
CACTUARS Canon: Final Fantasy

Found near and around the desert, just like its namesake. They are reclusive and in fact, can often be mistaken for cactii, depending on their size and color. Those unfortunate enough will find out the hard way that cactuars are capable of lashingtogether individual needles for its 1000 Needle attack, a fact which suggests that Cactuars are in fact intelligent enough for tool use.
▲ INDEX
CHOCOBOS Canon: Final Fantasy

Found almost everywhere. They are large avian creatures that can be found large enough to mount, but hard to catch at any size. If befriended, they can be trained to pull carts and carriages.
▲ INDEX
CORE HOUNDS Canon: World of Warcraft

A canine elemental beast that lives inside of mountains, and thus can be found deep within Krinot Mountains' cave system. Generally two-headed, though there are one-headed variants, they are vicious but can be tamed by experienced handlers, and have a flaming breath attack.
▲ INDEX
ELEMENTALS Canon: Final Fantasy XIV

Found anywhere in Aldrip, semi-uncommon. They are small fae-like spirits that have colors correasponding to their element, and they are more likely to be found in enviroments where that element thrives.
▲ INDEX
FIRELIGHTS Canon: Arcane

These small insects are very similar to the earthen firefly, but are native to Zaun. They have bioluminescent qualities and are able to emit a bright green light from their rears. It is not made clear if the bugs are naturally green, or the color is caused by something toxic in their environment.

For some, they are a symbol of hope and freedom.
▲ INDEX
GOOBBUES Canon: Final Fantasy XIV

Found in the plains and more commonly around Pessiria forest. These large creatures have an interesting relationship with the environment in that when they migrate, they bring flora with them on their backs. They also happen to look terrifying, but it is possible to befriend and ride them if you dare.
▲ INDEX
MORBOLS Canon: Final Fantasy XIV

Found in the Pessiria forest. Grotesque, strange, plant-life beasts with countless tentacles and gaping maws. Despite being plant life, some are able to fly. Most of its attacks are breath-based, wide reaching, and can inflict varying status effects, so they should be approached with caution.
▲ INDEX
RAPTORS Canon: Arcane

An avian species that is capable of shooting fire balls out of its mouth. While incapable of flight, they have large strong back legs and large front teeth used for hunting. This species tends to its young until they can fend for themselves against larger predators.

Their feathers can be used for making cloaks: they appear blue-greenish in color when young, and a deeper crimson when they mature.
▲ INDEX
RAZORFINS Canon: Arcane

More commonly known as wharf rats from the world they originate, Razorfins are are amphibious quadrupeds which are a terrifying blend of shark and rat which can be commonly found on or near docks on the ocean Their young are usually found near Butcher's Bridge. They are carnivores, and can be found in dark blue, white, purple, and red.
▲ INDEX
SLIME CATS Canon: World of Warcraft

What it says on the tin. An undead feline that has a slime body. When you pet it, your hands get all slimy, yet there's still something cute about it...
▲ INDEX
SPORE WALKERS Canon: World of Warcraft

Found in the Pessiria forest. Also known as marsh walkers, they are feral creatures who have evolved to their present state in Zangarmarsh in Outland. They turn the spores of the forest into poison to kill their prey and can produce lightning from their appendages to defend themselves.
▲ INDEX
THRESHADONS Canon: World of Warcraft

Also called threshers for short, they are plesiosaurs that live in all types of water, from rivers to lakes to oceans. Although they are ostensibly herbivores, they are very aggressive and will not hesitate to eat their downed enemies. Many a low-level adventurer has been unpleasantly surprised by a threshadon lurking just offshore. Can be harvested for their meat and their oil.

Giant Squid -- but with a twist!!

- creature that lives in the ocean near Adlrip's shore. Meanwhile no one has exactly seen creatures full body there are multiple sightings of its tentacles! Especially on the occasions when someone, be it npcs or The Chosen one, throws something in the water that doesn't quite belong there. During times like those the creature will flick the potential trash right back at the offender. And on sunny day it might bring them up close to surface to warm up!

It's a nice monster.

1. if it hasn't been established yet, how about them crows? obviously doesn't matter the area since they fly. (plus i need a special one to follow jinx around for it is canon for that bird to annoy her)

2. and who doesn't like lighting bugs or firelights? they're very pretty and i see them probably being around pessiria forest mainly. they do show up during the day - the series only shown maybe or two of them during the day. but at night, they're just everywhere.

3. wharf rat.
— "Wharf Rats, or Razorfins, are amphibious quadrupeds which are a terrifying blend of shark and rat commonly found on the docks of Bilgewater. Their young are usually found near Butcher's Bridge. Skin color(s): Dark Blue, White, Purple and Red. Diet: Carnivores. Habitat(s): Tropical Climate, Settlements (Near the Sea)"

4. raptors
—" Skin color(s): Tan, Brown. Feather color(s): Crimson, Purple, Blue (Young). Diet: Carnivorous. Habitat(s): Around-ish."

"While incapable of flight, they have large strong back legs and large front teeth used for hunting. This species tends to its young until they can fend for themselves against larger predators. Their feathers are used for making cloaks."

they also shoot fire balls out of their mouths so that's neat.

i don't want to submit too much but just these for right now.

sadly FE4 is CRUSHINGLY NORMCORE and only has either human enemies or literal dragon gods so I can't suggest anything from Jugdral

but I am gonna suggest that Aldrip could use Void Chickens from Stardew

JACK FROST - A winter fairy of European descent. He leaves ice patterns on windows and nips people's noses. Though normally an innocent creature, he will freeze his victims to death if provoked.

Nosalises -- aggressive, but weak mutants that travel in groups. The average appearance is that of a largely hairless bipedal mammal with a large snout and long teeth, but there are many variations in the species. They form nests underground and do not come out during daylight hours. Thought to have been mutated from a mole or rodent species.

Watchers -- another mutant that travels in packs, but instead resembles a deformed canine species. These guys are not as aggressive as the nosalises. Although they are predators that hunt for their food, they are stalkers and more intelligent than the average mutant. They will not always attack humans if they sense their chances in a fight are poor. When alerted, a lone watcher will begin howling, calling its pack for support.

Demons -- "Some people call these demons. I call them bitches." ... Demons, AKA pterodactyls or gargoyles, are like the big daddy mutant of the surface. They essentially resemble massive bipedal vampire bats with claws and a crazy venus flytrap-esque mouth full of teeth. They usually nest very high above ground on large structures and are active at both night and day, but do spend various hours sleeping. Demons are quite formidable opponents, but not impossible to take down with some well-aimed shots. If these were introduced to the game, it would be obviously in an incredibly small quantity... but the good part about them is that they hunt both the watchers and the nosalises and they are not always intent on hunting humans so long as they have adequate food elsewhere.

Ronteal
"A being that lurks in the shadows. Different tales about Ronteal have been passed on for many generations. It is said that Ronteal appears first in the nightmares, only to fuel his or her own materialization to the physical world with the fear it instills."
- The New Gods when asked about Ronteals.
Ronteals start out in the ground with only their head exposed, but if someone comes close they climb out and pursue, often using those blade-arms to chop off victims limbs.
Sometimes they lack arms and are easier to kill.
They drop rust colored pearls which is really just a creepy marble

Headless
look there's no indication that there are more than the four in game or that these are anything but moon-mutated dogs/wolves, but i like the idea of headless canines running around.

i have nothing to offer from my own canon so elden ring.

Gravebird: Ancient golems created to guard graves, which they can be found perching on like a statue. Once approached, they may become hostile and spout ghostflame to attack those who dare disturb the rest of the souls they protect.

Crystal Snail: Snails with crystals growing from their shell. Normally found in caves curled up within their shells to blend in to their surroundings, but will attack with its icy breath, crystal projectiles, or even a surprisingly fast jump or bite if provoked.

Spirit Jellyfish: Ethereal beings usually found near places of rest or calm, acting as protectors. They are usually peaceful, but if angered, they attack with deadly poison fired from a distance.
